During this 60-minute, online session, Kathleen Wright will lead students in the proper use of the head wrap (aka eye wrap/bandage) so they can experience the resting of the senses and the quieting of the mind. Class will include how to use the wrap, a few asanas, and breath awareness. Relatively short but highly informative, this session covers a sometimes overlooked practice that can provide important benefits.
As used in classes at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, the head wrap is a basic tool used to quiet mental activity and equalize internal and external pressure on the brain. When you experience the head wrap, you feel more contained and content. Its use is often recommended during some asana practice in some therapeutic sequences and may be used during the practice of pranayama. The head wrap can also help us understand the fifth limb of yoga, Pratyahara, or the withdrawal of the sense organs.
Students that don’t have their own head/eye wraps can borrow one from the Yoga Horizons studio or come to the Yoga Horizons studio on the evening of the class and participate in the online session from there. Head wraps can also be purchased from the IYNAUS store: https://secure.iynaus.org/np/clients/iynaus/product.jsp?product=244&
